About 53 km from Blantyre, in the Chikwawa area before Majete, there is a well-known playground called Gulugufe Experience. It’s the kind of place that pushes you physically, but at the same time, gives you so much fun. It’s perfect for families, friends, and even team building.
Gulugufe is a Chichewa word meaning butterfly, and true to its name, the place is full of them. But that’s not all—you’ll also find a swimming pool, a restaurant, and accommodation, making it a complete getaway spot.
We visited with my colleague and her son. Reina is still 3 years old, so her activity choices were quite limited. While she stayed with my colleague most of the time, I decided to go for the special deal, which includes entrance and unlimited extra activities for MWK 29,000.
Before entering the playground, you’re required to sign a discharge of liabilities form. Everything you do at Gulugufe is at your own risk, so following the safety rules is very important.
I was most excited about the high ropes, zip lines, and sky cycling, so I went straight for those. I did the activities together with my colleague’s 9-year-old son—and honestly, I felt like a child again. For a moment, I forgot everything else and just focused on having fun.
As someone who enjoys adrenaline, the high ropes were my favorite. They go up to about 10 meters high, and being up there really got my heart racing. The ropes moved slightly beneath my feet, and it felt like being in a real obstacle course.
I also tried a skateboard-style activity on a rope and the sky cycling, where you glide through the air. That one was truly amazing—it felt like flying!
But the most challenging part for me came at the very end of the high ropes—something like a rope traverse.
My feet kept crossing over each other, and I just couldn’t find my rhythm. The ropes felt unsteady, and I couldn’t move as fast as I wanted to. Slowly, I started getting tired. I tried to push myself, but in the end, I had to let go.
It was frustrating in the moment—but at the same time, I couldn’t help but laugh. It was tough, it makes me sweat, but still so much fun.
There are still many activities I didn’t get to try, and that alone makes me want to go back. I honestly think it’s even better when you visit as a group. It would be such a great place for team building.
On the other hand, Reina was happily enjoying the slides, the small playground, and of course, the swimming pool. She had her own kind of fun, just at a lower level!
Since we chose the special deal, we also got a 10% discount at the restaurant. We tried the beef lasagna, and it was really delicious—definitely worth it after all the activities.
Overall, I had a great experience at Gulugufe. It’s more than just a fun place—it challenges you, pushes you a little out of your comfort zone, and leaves you with great memories.
I would highly recommend it if you’re looking for adventure, fun, and just a bit of challenge.
